Many of us didn’t know about the history of drugs in Nepal. Some of us might don’t want to know about it too, but illicit drugs and its addiction is harming the youths of Nepal day to day.
Every one is curious about drugs and drug addiction all over the world and this is growing as the major problem in development of our country too. World Health Organization (W.H.O) defines drugs as any substance that alters one or two behaviours of an individual after its consumption. The range of drug varies from smuggling stuff (heroine, cocaine, brown sugar) to medicines used for purpose. Most of these drugs are used for medical purpose, these drugs have very purposeful use when it is utilized properly. But the problem gets created after they are abused or say misused. Anybody who abuses or misuses these substances is drug addicts. Drug addiction is spreading all across the globe very effectively in spite of various efforts against illicit drug trafficking.
In the context of Nepal, consumption of some intoxication such as marijuana, alcohol was in practice since a long time. Use of these drugs as part of the cultural norm did not create any major social problem during that period. However, the types of drugs used have been shifted from cannabis to synthetic opiates and other chemical substances since the last few decades. Many people believes that the possession of illicit drugs arrive with hippies from the west entered in Nepal in 1960. They introduce varieties of drug till 30 years, i.e. 1990, though the rapid pace of addiction was fast, addicts use unconventional method of using these drugs. Till 90’s people are just taking the oral method for drug use. After this era, i.e. 1960-1990, however the types of drugs used have been shifted from marijuana to synthetic opiates and other chemical substances. Drug use has also changed from smoking/ingesting to injecting. People started taking drugs through syringe and turned to IDU’s (Intravenous Drug Users). The injecting of drugs has become one of the major causes of HIV and hepatitis C.
In recent years, illicit trafficking of drug is the main reason to arise this trend in Nepali youths. Open border to India and weak administration is the main reason of illicit drug trafficking in Nepal. So, drug abuse has become growing problem in Nepal and drug-control is a big challenge for the government.
